How to convert Tailfin Racks and AeroPacks and why you may choose to do this
Note: This guide references our AeroPack, now available as the CargoPack system or as part of our modular Pannier Rack range
You may already own a Rack or an AeroPack, or perhaps you’re considering purchasing one (use our guide if you’re unsure which option is best for you). At first glance, it may look like this decision is final, with no option to convert later down the line. However, the good news is that all of our systems are modular – meaning the Rack and the AeroPack share a lot of the same parts. This makes switching setups a simple process with only one or two extra components required.
Perhaps your riding style has changed, or you’ve signed up for an off-road ultra and you want to optimise your setup for the event. This guide outlines some scenarios why you may wish to convert and also the products required.
Rack to AeroPack
We typically recommend Rack setups for road riding and commuting. The Rack acts as a base on which a top bag and side panniers can be attached. So if you only need to carry a laptop to the office you can ride in with just a pannier bag attached – no need for a top bag. But what if you own a Rack and have decided to start off-road bikepacking? When heading off-road, particularly on full-suspension mountain bikes, the AeroPack is a better option. It’s what many of our R&D Riders use for their events too. The mounting system of the AeroPack is simpler compared to the Tailfin Rack and AP Rack Top Bag combo, resulting in a lighter weight and enhanced reliability during off-road use. Additionally, since the bag is integrated into the structure, it eliminates the possibility of noise or rattling when venturing into more challenging terrains, which is an added advantage.
So how do you convert a Rack to an AeroPack? Thanks to the modular nature of Tailfin’s products, only one part is required; AeroPack Connector Parts. Then, use our AeroPack assembly guide to complete the conversion. If you have a dropper post or a small bike frame then we’d recommend using the AeroPack Extender too.
AeroPack to Rack
The AeroPack integrates the top bag and the rear arch into one unit. As mentioned above, it’s a great option for anything off-road. However, it could be that you now plan to do more credit card touring or perhaps intend to ride to work more often. In these scenarios, you may find it more convenient to have removable bags instead of the fixed top bag featured on the AeroPack. By converting to a Rack setup, you can leave the Rack fitted to your bike and remove the bags to head into your hotel or office.
Converting an existing AeroPack is a simple process and requires two additional parts; AP Rack Top Bag Connector Parts and a Top Stay. Either an Alloy or Carbon Top Stay can be used – regardless of the original AeroPack’s construction material (e.g. a Carbon Arch and an Alloy Top Stay can be combined and vice-versa).
