13th September

Sunday

Roll home

A relaxed ride back to the start.

Together if you want, solo if you don’t. No times. No pressure.

Just the road home and whatever café stop takes your fancy.

The rules of the ride

  1. One mandatory checkpoint
Everyone has to pass through it. Beyond that, there are nine more scattered across the Welsh countryside. Each one is worth a varying point score (based on different factors such as difficulty and elevation). Chase them all or plan cleverly.
  2. The biggest detour wins
Most events reward the fastest line. We reward the longest. Visit the most checkpoints via the most adventurous route, and the top prizes are yours.
  3. Overnight at Fforest Fields
Camping, showers, hot food, a bar, and talks from cycling royalty. This isn’t a checkpoint – it’s the destination. And what a destination at that… We’ve booked one of the most beautiful campsites the Welsh countryside has to offer.
  4. Friday night pizza + registration
Get there early? Join us Friday evening for pizza and pick up your tracker. Registration is open all evening at the start line, or Saturday morning if you’d rather roll in fresh.
  5. Sunday morning swim
Optional. Highly recommended. There’s a lake. It’s cold. It’s glorious.
  6. Bag drop
We’ll shuttle a small bag to the overnight hub for you. Dry clothes, sleeping kit, that sort of thing.
You still need to carry essentials on the bike – this isn’t a suitcase service.

  7. Not sure about route planning?
We’ve got you. The ‘Straight Route’ is our suggested direct line – around 75km, no decisions required. Same campfire at the end. Routes are here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where and when is the event?

The event officially starts on the morning of Saturday 12th September, but Friday camping is included in the ticket price if you want to get there earlier. The start and finish location is here.

Do I need to plan a route?

To win the biggest prizes you’ll need to map your own route, based on checkpoints which will be sent out to you before the event. We have though put together a ‘Straight Route’ if you’d rather just take in the fresh air and enjoy the party pace. The routes can be found here. GPX files here.

I’ve never bikepacked before. Can I do this?

Absolutely. Take the direct route, pack light, enjoy the ride. Half the people at Detours are doing their first bikepacking event. That’s kind of the point.

What if I get lost?

That’s… the idea? But seriously – you’ll have GPS, you’ll have phone signal most of the time, and you’ll have a direct route option if navigation isn’t your thing.

What bike do I need?

Whatever you’ve got. Gravel bike, hardtail, rigid mountain bike, touring bike, even a sturdy road bike if you stick to the direct route. If it has two wheels and you can strap a bag to it, you’re in.

Do I have to camp?

Camping is included in your ticket, but if tents aren’t your thing, there are B&Bs and hotels nearby. You’ll just need to book those yourself.

Is this a race?

No. There are prizes for the biggest detours, but there are also prizes for other surprise categories given on the day. It’s a bikepacking adventure with a twist.

What’s included in the ticket?

Camping at Fforest Fields, hot food on Saturday night, access to showers, talks, breakfast Sunday morning, a tracker, a finisher prize, and a great weekend.

Can my family come?

Yes! We have spectator tickets that include camping and food. They can cheer you in, join the party, and heckle you at the Sunday swim.

What’s the bag drop?

We’ll transport one small bag per rider to the overnight hub. Think: dry clothes, camp shoes, a towel. You still carry your riding and camping essentials – food, tools, layers, tents. It’s a helping hand, not a removal van. This is a bikepacking event after all!

Do I have to register on Friday?

Nope. Registration is open Friday evening (with pizza) or Saturday morning before the start. Friday is optional but recommended if you fancy a relaxed start to the weekend.
