SL vs. UD Panniers – which is best for me?

Super Light (SL) vs. Ultra Durable (UD) Panniers: a guide to help you decide between the two 22L panniers in our range.

The 22L Panniers are offered in two versions; Super Light (SL) and Ultra Durable (UD).

Our 22L Side Panniers have been in our range since our original T1 Rack was launched and these bags remain as popular as ever. When used in combination with our Top Bag, the panniers allow you to carry a max of 27kg on road with a total volume of 64L, enough to cross a continent.

Material differences

The key distinction between the panniers is the material used for the bag itself – and the resulting weight difference. SL Panniers use a lighter-grade nylon, and as a result, there is a weight saving of approximately 120g per bag. If you want a lightweight pannier, the SL Pannier is the bag for you.

The UD Pannier uses a heavier-weight material and is the more robust of the two bags – constructed with thicker, tougher walls. Its hypalon construction means it will stand up to more of a rough ride and is suited to those who expect their bags to take a pounding. If you plan on heading off-road to camp then the UD Pannier is the bag to choose.

The material used on the UD Panniers is slightly more expensive to produce than the SL and this is also reflected in the price difference between the two bags.

What do they share in common?

Virtually every other component is identical between the two bags, for example, the same internal alloy frame and X-Clamp system are shared by both panniers. The X-Clamp provides a rock-solid attachment to the rack and results in a rattle-free ride over any terrain.

Not only are the panniers secure, but they’re also quick to fit, taking seconds to attach so you can start your day’s ride without the hassle of complex attachment systems. We also include inserts to fit the panniers to third-party racks.

Both bags are 100% waterproof, too – so no matter if you are commuting to work or heading off for the weekend your kit will remain dry. Each pannier also includes a shoulder strap to make carrying the bag easy.

The dimensions of both panniers are also the same and they can carry up to a 17” laptop. In 2021 we also updated both panniers to include an air release valve and this helps expel any air from the bag to reduce its volume when packing.

The maximum load the panniers can carry is also the same – 9kg for on-road riding (less for off-road trips, depending on the severity of the terrain).

Style of riding

If you’re more likely to use these for riding road, we would recommend the slightly lighter and less robust Super Light Pannier. If you’re riding more off-road, and will be moving your pannier bag around a lot, then we’d recommend the Ultra Durable Pannier.
