Product FAQ
Yes, we changed the name of the AeroPack to the CargoPack to simplify the product range.
The fixed CargoPack (formerly known as the AeroPack) is an integrated seat pack, meaning that the bike bag and arch are connected together. To remove these systems from the bike, the entire system has to be removed, which can be done in a matter of seconds. The fixed CargoPack and SpeedPack systems are lighter and have a more simplistic design.
The alloy Journey Pannier Rack and Carbon Pannier Rack give the option to have a separate Pannier Rack and Rack Top Bag (CargoPack Rack Top Bag or SpeedPack Rack Top Bag) as well as Panniers. This means the rack can remain on the bike when you remove the Rack Top Bag.
For some riders, these differences are important; for others, less so. The pannier racks are slightly heavier, but allow more flexibility with how you remove your bags. The pannier racks are quick-release and can be removed from the bike in seconds.
You can change between the systems at any time, and for more info, we have a useful comparison guide for fixed vs removable rear systems.
The removable CargoPack/SpeedPack Top Bag is best suited to road and gravel bikes (Carbon Pannier Rack). For all MTBs, we recommend the fixed CargoPack or SpeedPack (or removable Rack Top Bags on the alloy Journey Rack), which are suitable for all disciplines (road, gravel and MTB). See our blog for fitting our CargoPack and SpeedPack to full-suspension MTBs.
We recommend the fixed CargoPack or SpeedPack system for riding off-road. With the fixed system, the bike bags fit directly to the arch, have fewer components, and are more durable on rough trails, making them more suited for riding off-road. That being said, avoid tackling MTB jumps, as this will reduce the lifespan of your rack/bag and also your bike.
Our removable CargoPack and carbon Pannier Rack are suited to road and light gravel use only; however, the removable alloy CargoPack is suitable for off-road riding.
Yes, the Packing Cubes were designed for the CargoPack.
Yes, a CargoPack will include the CargoPack Bag, Arch and fixed connector parts. The bike bag and arch connect together to form one fixed system. See our CargoPack assembly guide here.
Both the fixed alloy and Carbon CargoPacks have been tested to the same standards and are capable of carrying a maximum of 27kg (for road riding only). The carbon-fibre CargoPack has been designed to be strong, and we have historically seen close-to-zero failures due to impact. The main differences between the Alloy and Carbon versions of the CargoPack are weight, price, and aesthetics. You can check out our comparison blog for more information. The removable CargoPack and alloy Journey Rack have a higher load rating (32kg) than the removable CargoPack and carbon Pannier Rack (27kg).
We don’t recommend carrying your laptop in your CargoPack due to the shape of the CargoPack bag and the lack of dedicated support for an item such as a laptop. We have a range of Pannier bags well-suited to carrying your laptop instead, which can be combined with our Laptop Holsters.
This depends on the type of riding you’re doing now and your plans for the future. If the majority of your trips are short overnighters, then you may not need panniers. If you’re planning some bigger adventures, commute often, or want the option to carry up to 27kg in the future, then we recommend the pannier mounts, as these cannot be added later (you would require a new arch available on our Spares Page). With our Pannier Adaptors, you can also carry other brands of panniers.
Yes, all Cargo Cages fit the alloy arch only, even if it has pannier mounts, although you cannot use the panniers if the cargo cages are fitted, though.
The CargoPack Bag has loops on the rear of the bag made for certain clip-on lights, or we offer a Seatpost Mimic Light Mount, a Fixed Light Mount, which fits to the 64mm spaced bolts on the base of the CargoPack Bag to allow you to mount your rear light directly to the pack.
To mount the Garmin Varia radar on the Tailfin Pannier Rack, you’ll need the Seatpost Mimic Light Mount and fit this to the underside of the CargoPack Top Bag. For the most secure fit, we recommend ordering the Garmin Seat Rail Kit separately, too. The Tailfin Light Mount has a GoPro fitting, so you can use it in conjunction with the Garmin kit to attach the Garmin Varia radar to it.
The main compartment is 100% waterproof.
We offer spares for much of the CargoPack System, which can be found on our Spares Page. For warranty queries, please submit a warranty form.
Fitting FAQ
Assembly requires a Torx T25 key (found on most multi-tools), and you can find guidance in our Assembly guides.
We’ve designed our products to fit the majority of bikes, from road to full-suspension. We offer frame mounting as well as Axle mounting (both QR and Thru Axles). We have a useful guide explaining our mounting options. If you’re still unsure, contact our team for help and advice.
26″ Maximum Tyre Width – 4″ / 100mm
27.5″/650B Maximum Tyre Width – 3.5″ / 90mm
29″/700C Maximum Tyre Width – 2.9″ / 75mm
For help choosing your axle, please use our Axle Finder tool.
The fixed CargoPack System (V2 – Jan 2026+ only) comes with a 50mm Seatpost fitlink connector and one that is angle-adjustable for maximum adjustment and best fit. For the V1 (pre-2026) we offer the Extended Seat Post Connector – available on our Spares Page.
The arches for our fixed carbon and alloy systems measure 447mm in height (when measured from the Thru Axle), so you can use this measurement to see how high it will come relative to your frame. The removable alloy Cargopack is the Journey Rack, and this arch is lower in height. We have many customers using our rear systems with XL+ bikes.
The fixed CargoPack System (V2 – Jan 2026+ only) comes with 2 x 50mm Seatpost fitlink connectors – one that is angle-adjustable for maximum adjustment and best fit. For the V1 (pre-2026), we offer the Extended Seat Post Connector – available on our Spares Page.
We recommend the fixed CargoPack and SpeedPack systems or removable alloy Journey Rack for all terrains and on full-suspension MTBs. All our rear bike rack and bag systems use a unique articulated design; each pivot contains replaceable plain bushings, which allow it to adjust position as the suspension compresses. See our blog for further tips on fitting Tailfin products to full-suspension bikes. All our Rear Systems are compatible with road and gravel bike suspension systems such as Trek’s IsoSpeed and Cannondale’s Kingpin Suspension.
Yes, the quick-release seatpost connector is compatible with all seat posts, including dropper, carbon, and aero. The Long Seatpost Strap is available on our Spares Page.
All our Rear Systems come with 2 choices for mounting:
– Axle + Fast Release Dropouts: Your system includes a rear axle (choice of QR or Thru Axles) to swap out on your bike; the Rack then fits to this axle in seconds, allowing it to be mounted or removed in seconds.
– Frame Mounts + Fast-Release Dropouts: Your system includes mounts which screw into the frame eyelets on your frame; the rack then affixes to these mounts in seconds, allowing it to be mounted or removed in seconds.
We have a comprehensive mounting guide for the different options.
Yes, all Tailfin Rear Systems come with security screws that allow you to ‘lock’ your Fast-Release Dropouts or seatpost connector to your Tailfin Axle, Frame Mount Adaptors or seatpost, depending on your chosen mounting option and the rear system you have.
Yes, you will need to add our Third Party Pannier Adaptors to your order.

If you’re new to the Tailfin ecosystem, the new CargoPack (previously known as the AeroPack) refines an already standout product line. I cannot think of a better rear bag system, especially if you’re transferring it between multiple bikes. I am sure I’ll be happily using mine for years to come.Bike Gear Database
